Koh Samui: a unique wedding destination
Koh Samui island.
Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand in the southern province of Surat Thani. Situated approximately 700 km southeast of Bangkok, Samui is Thailand’s third largest island after Phuket and Koh Chang.
Covering an area of 247 sq km, Samui measures 25km at its longest point and 21km at its widest. The island is often referred to as Coconut Island as it gives harvest to over two million coconuts every month.
The island was originally enjoyed by only the most daring travelers, who were the first to witness the outstanding natural beauty. This helped Samui develop a reputation as a secret backpacker's retreat. But word of Samui's legendary ambience spread quickly, and the friendly people, small island atmosphere and totally relaxing environment soon encouraged more visitors to make the trip.
The opening of the airport in 1989, enabled Samui to become a destination available to a much wider group of travellers. Since then, the growth has been astonishing and the island is now universally regarded as one of the leading luxury destinations in the world.
International hotel groups, superstores, and shopping centres have appeared and transformed the appearance of many parts of the island. Almost all reminders of the island's backpacker history have been erased, but the famed ambience and unique atmosphere of Samui have miraculously survived.Strict building regulations have ensure that the island now boasts all of the necessary modern facilities and infrastructure to compete with other worldwide destinations; it's maintained the magical relaxing environment and the outstanding natural beauty continues to enchant the new visitors arriving each year.
Samui is a stunning tropical island with picture-perfect white sandy beaches and tropical forests that cover the mountains of the interior. It's a truly idyllic location with something to please everyone.
The island is now a must-visit destination for travellers to Thailand and its location, and extensive flight links, make it the perfect base for discovering what South East Asia has to offer. Direct flights to Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong make Samui the ideal hub for many visitors.
The only problem you may encounter is never wanting to leave the island behind.
